Black Hole Mass, Velocity Dispersion and the Radio Source in Agn

چکیده

The recent discovery of a correlation between nuclear black hole mass, M•, and the stellar velocity dispersion, σ∗(Gebhardt et al. 2000a; Ferrarase & Merritt 2000), in elliptical galaxies and spiral bulges, has raised the question whether such a relationship exists for AGN. Estimates of M• for many AGN, made using reverberation mapping techniques, allow exploration of the relationship between black hole mass, the host galaxy and the energetics of nuclear emission. However, since only a few AGN have both M• and σ∗ measurements, we use the [OIII] λ 5007 emission line widths on the assumption that for most AGN the forbidden line kinematics are dominated by virial motion in the host galaxy bulge. We find that a relation does exist between M• and [OIII] line width for AGN which is similar to the one found by Gebhardt et al. (2000a), although with more scatter as expected if secondary influences on the gas kinematics are also present. Our conclusion is that both active and inactive galaxies follow the same relationship between black hole mass and bulge gravitational potential. We find no compelling evidence for systematic differences in the mass estimates from reverberation mapping and stellar dynamics. We also find that for radio quiet AGN the radio power and black hole mass are highly correlated linking emission on scales of kiloparsecs with the nuclear energy source. Radio Jets in Galaxies with Actively Accreting Black Holes: new insights from the SDSS

In the local Universe, the majority of radio-loud AGN are found in massive elliptical galaxies with old stellar populations and weak or undetected emission lines. At high redshifts, however, almost all known radio AGN have strong emission lines. This paper focuses on a subset of radio AGN with emission lines (EL-RAGN) selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We explore the hypothesis that th...

The Black Hole - Bulge Relationship for QSOs at High Redshift

We examine the black hole mass galaxy bulge relationship in high-redshift QSOs. Black hole masses are derived from the broad emission lines, and the host galaxy stellar velocity dispersion σ∗ is estimated from the widths of the radio CO emission lines. At redshifts z > 3, the CO line widths are narrower than expected for the black hole mass, indicating that these giant black holes reside in und...

Near - IR imaging and spectroscopy of the nuclear region of the disturbed Virgo cluster spiral NGC 4438 ⋆

We present near-infrared VLT ISAAC imaging and spectroscopy of the peculiar Virgo galaxy NGC 4438, whose nucleus has been classified as a LINER. The data are supplemented by TIMMI2 imaging, and compared to previous WFPC2 HST broadband images. Images and position-velocity maps of the [Fe II] and H2 line emissions are presented and compared with the distribution of the optical narrow-line region ...

Selection bias in dynamically-measured supermassive black hole samples: Scaling relations and correlations between residuals in semi-analytic galaxy formation models

Recent work has confirmed that the scaling relations between the masses of supermassive black holes and host-galaxy properties such as stellar masses and velocity dispersions may be biased high. Much of this may be caused by the requirement that the black-hole sphere of influence must be resolved for the black-hole mass to be reliably estimated. We revisit this issue with a comprehensive galaxy...

Inclinations and black hole masses of Seyfert 1 galaxies

A tight correlation of black hole mass (MBH) and central velocity dispersion (σ) has been found recently for both active and quiescent galaxies. By applying this correlation, we develop a simple method to derive the inclination angles for a sample of 11 Seyfert 1 galaxies that have both measured central velocity dispersions and black hole masses estimated by reverberation mapping. These angles,...
